Wobbler's Syndrome or cervical vertebral instability (CVI) occurs primarily in Dobermans and Great Danes. Ataxia, pain, or poorly coordinated movement can be mistaken for clumsiness in a fast-growing large breed Great Dane. Older dogs, like Dobermans, may wobble in the hind end with short choppy steps in the front end. Careful evaluation by your veterinarian in combination with X-ray myelograms or computed tomography (CT) is needed to determine whether surgery is indicated. Extensive nursing care is required after surgery.
